Melanoma Pictures & Information

Melanoma-PicturesAre you worried that a mole or freckle you have may be melanoma skin cancer? If you are then then the melanoma pictures and the information on this website - along with our advice may help you to self-diagnose to see if you are at risk.

Melanoma skin cancer may be potentially dangerous. When MoleMap started years ago as an important service to help Kiwi families with melanoma early detection, there was little that ordinary people could do 'pro-actively' detect melanoma at the early stages. That has changed.

The Melanoma pictures on this website may help by giving examples of how cancerous moles or freckles compare to your own. In addition to the melanoma pictures, we also provide a self-diagnosis tool/questionnaire that you can use to identify your level of risk.

Melanoma may appear without notice or warning but it may also start to develop within a freckle or mole that you have now. Unfortunately, it can spread at a fast rate which is the reason that timely early detection is so vital.

The good news is that by most people who have melanoma detected in the early stages go on to make a complete recovery.

Melanoma Pictures & A,B,C,D

At MoleMap, we use a simple A,B,C,D system to help those who are concerned about melanoma to better detect suspicious skin moles or freckles.

  • A = Asymmetry - This refers to the shape of the mole. Does one shape of one half of the mole match the other half?
  • B = Border - The edges may be notched, blurry or ragged - or the outline may be irregular. Sometimes the pigment of the mole may 'bleed' into the skin that surrounds.
  • C = Colour - The mole's colour might be uneven or variable. There could be brown or black or tan shades. Other hues that may be visible might be pink, white, blue, red or grey.
  • D = Diameter - This refers to changes in the overall dimensions of the mole or freckle. Usually, a melanoma will be not less than 6 milimetres across in diameter (about the width of a pencil).

Some melanomas don't typically fit the skin cancer 'ABCD' system however. To read more information about detection and to see melanoma pictures, go ahead and click here. Don't delay! A mole you have may require immediate professional attention.
